Experiences

“The air smells of earth and firewood, and life moves with the rhythm of the land. You’ll hear the soft creek of the loom as someone weaves eri-silk in the shade of a bamboo hut.”

In Khweng village, the winding footpaths curve like rivers, bending through bamboo groves and blooming gardens. The name “Khweng” comes from the khasi word “khongweng” meaning curved, reflecting its charming serpentine layout, complete with locally maintained bamboo and tin waste bins. The village is a biodiversity powerhouse, home to over 319 varieties of food crops, from wild greens and turmeric to tin waste bins. Khweng contributes to the region’s reputation for Ahimsa Eri Silk (Peace Silk). Women maintain the entire process, from silkworm rearing and spinning to weaving and natural dyeing - ensuring that tradition and sustainability remain alive.
