Eri Silk Village, Umden
Umiam Lake, a serene reservoir just outside Shillong, is embraced by pine-covered hills and dramatic skies. Originally built as part of a hydroelectric project, it has evolved into one of Meghalaya’s most beloved spots for nature, water sports, and lakeside leisure. A gateway for travelers entering Shillong, its calm waters and changing skies make it a scenic stop year-round.
Take a cultural tour through the community and experience the lush greenery amidst the whistling sounds of the village’s feathered friends. Home to indigenous communities, Umden-Diwon also shelters sacred groves rich with over a hundred tree species, ancient monoliths, and diverse native flora. The Design, Innovation and Resource Centre (DIRC) was established to transform the region into the state’s first Eri Sik Village. Umden-Diwon is the proud production hub of Ryndia silk– a non-violent, handwoven fabric deeply treasured by the people of Meghalaya and often passed down as a prized possession. Revered for its natural elegance and cultural value, Ryndia graces weddings, festive celebrations, and meaningful gift exchanges.
