Experiences

“Tucked in the East Khasi Hills, Kongthong Village is a living archive of Khasi oral tradition, where each resident is known not by name, but by a unique whistled melody passed down through generations.”

Kongthong Village, nestled in the misty East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, is a place where names are sung, not spoken. Known as the Whistling Village, each resident is identified by a unique melody—composed by their mother and passed down in the form of a lullaby. This age-old tradition, called Jingrwai Iawbei, transforms everyday communication into a living symphony, making Kongthong not just a destination, but a cultural echo of Meghalaya’s oral heritage.
