Nartiang Megalith
“In the mist-cloaked hills of West Jaintia, Nartiang stands silent and steadfast—where stone becomes scripture, and every monolith whispers the weight of ancestral voices etched into Jaintia history.”
For travelers eager to uncover Meghalaya’s hidden heritage, Nartiang is a must-visit. This quiet village in the Jaintia Hills holds one of the most striking collections of megaliths in Northeast India—massive stone structures once raised to honor kings and nobles of the Jaintia kingdom. Some of these stones were erected half a millennia ago and additions were made till the middle of the nineteenth century with the standing monoliths or menhirs (moo shynrang), dedicated to the male ancestors and the flat ones, the dolmens (moo kynthai), are dedicated to the women. This megalithic site showcases an awe-inspiring collection of megaliths and dolmens believed to commemorate royal exploits, rituals, and ancestral reverence.
