
Siju Bird Sanctuary
A serene wildlife sanctuary in Meghalaya, home to rare and migratory birds, offering a peaceful retreat for nature lovers.
Siju Bird Sanctuary, situated in the South Garo Hills, is Meghalaya’s oldest wildlife sanctuary. It is a haven for birdwatchers, hosting species like the grey hornbill, Siberian ducks, and peacock pheasants. The sanctuary also shelters diverse wildlife, including elephants, leopards, and Hoolock gibbons. Surrounded by lush forests and the Simsang River, it provides a tranquil escape into Meghalaya’s rich biodiversity.

Accessible from Shillong (450 km via NH62, 10–11 hours) and Guwahati (216 km via Goalpara and Dudhnoi, 6–7 hours), preferably by private vehicle or overnight sumo.

The sanctuary is located near Siju Cave, approximately 33 km from Baghmara. The route takes about 1.5 hours through forested terrai.
It is advisable to arrange for a local guide or travel buddy who is familiar with the local language and location.
