A Botanical Wonderland

Over 400 Shades of Green, Mawphlang is a treasure trove of plant life. Its thick canopy and moist forest floor nurture a vast variety of flora.

  • In spring, the grove is particularly striking as two species of rhododendrons, Rhododendron formosum and Rhododendron arboreum.
  • Subtropical Broadleaf creates a lush, dense canopy that contrasts with the surrounding Khasi pine (Pinus kesiya) landscape.
  • The Himalayan pear (Pyrus pashia) adds delicate white blossoms to the spring palette.
  • The grove is also home to the oak species Quercus griffithii, known for its broad leaves and ecological importance.
  • Other notable woody plants include the fragrant shrub and the evergreen trees.
  • Fern lovers will find rich diversity here, carpeting the forest floor and thriving in its moist, shaded microclimate.

Hidden Fauna

Though the animals here are shy, the grove is alive with movement. Look closely and you might spot a flicker of motion among the leaves, a shadow slipping through the trees, or hear the soft rustle of unseen life all around you.

  • Mawphlang Sacred Grove is a favourite spot for migrating and endangered birds such as the tawny-breasted Wren Babbler, Grey Sibia, Blyth’s Kingfisher, golden-throated Barbet, black-winged Cuckoo-Shrike, short-billed Minivet, maroon Oriole, and Grey Treepie.
  • Bat species recorded from the area include the Woolly Horseshoe Bat, Hodgson’s Bat, Whiskered Bat, and the Little or Tibetan Tube-nosed Bat.

Cultural Significance

The Mawphlang Sacred Grove is sacred to the Khasi people, who believe it is guarded by forest spirits. Entering the grove is like stepping into a temple of nature where nothing can be taken, not even a twig, for fear of inviting misfortune. Rituals and oral traditions have preserved this ecological gem for generations.
