Mawmluh Caves
“One of Meghalaya’s longest caves, Mawmluh Cave, is not just a cave; it is a living archive of Earth’s secrets, waiting to be explored one careful step at a time.”
Jagged stalagmites and winding passages alternating between shadowy, mysterious corridors and vast, echoing chambers that resemble nature’s own cathedrals are the images that Mawmluh Cave conjures. The thrilling cave exploration at Mawmluh Cave is like walking through time, where the layers of rock tell stories etched across millennia. The strata studied by geologists are right before your eyes, offering a rare, tangible glimpse into Earth’s deep past. Located in the rain-drenched landscape of Sohra (Cherrapunjee), these caves have also become a site of cutting-edge climate research. Scientists study the stalagmites to decode past monsoon patterns and predict future droughts. A team from Vanderbilt University, for instance, discovered a surprising link between winter rainfall here and climatic shifts in the Pacific Ocean—based on just 50 years of growth in a single stalagmite.
